When the ANZPT got started on day one, there were some 310 players competing at AUD$2,700 a shot. At stake is a slice of poker heaven – to the tune of AUD$775,000. First place gets to claim a whopping $195,700 with plenty of cash fallout for the remaining players. Each of the players in the Melbourne leg of the contest was given 20,000 chips. This multi-tiered system allows for challenging competition and an enthusiastic poker audience.
Poker stars moving forward and other players heading back
This competition is not for the faint of heart though. It’s proven to be a grueling couple of sessions during which many top-tier poker stars have found themselves returning home. Players who failed to make the grade include Jonathan Karamalikis, Joe Hachem, Jay Kinkade, Grant Levy and others. But it’s good times ahead for Tyron Krost, Lee Nelson, Simon Watt, Tony Hachem, Amanda De Cesare and Martin Rowe. These stars will be shining as the tournament moves into high gear.
The chip stack king – James Obst is smiling all the way to the bank with some 156,200 chips. He’s the previous winner of the PokerStars World Championship of online poker. Hot on his heels is Ryan McKay on 154,500 chips. Popular poker player Daniel Nielson is on 138,300 chips while Carl Booth is on 121,500. Near the bottom of the leaderboard are two super players in Bruno Portaro and Mark Iskander. The third and final day is taking place today Monday 11th October and it’s anybody’s guess whose steel nerves will outlast the competition and claim the spoils of victory.
